Workshop Theme
Many children in Idaho depend upon lunch at school for their main meal of the day and many go without sufficient food during the week-end. Parents also struggle to feed their children during the summer when school is out. As the recession has caused schools to shorten the school week or even school year, it has become even more important to make sure that Idaho children have access to “food that’s in when school is out.”
This workshop track will explore the issue and extent of childhood hunger and food insecurity in Idaho; review the numerous programs that link children to healthy meals and snacks; and focus upon a few successful out-of-school meal programs that Idaho communities can implement to make a difference. Examples of these programs include the USDA Summer Meal Program, After School Snacks and Meal Program, Backpack Program, WIC programs, Come learn about what you, your organization, and your community can do to make a difference! Join others in identifying ‘next steps’ for Idaho in addressing childhood hunger.
